The Scoop, July 2010
Summer is definitely here and the heat is on. I hope everyone is staying cool and making some great finds. Speaking of finds, at the monthly board meeting, one of our more notorious directors brought in some great beach hunt items. We viewed a very nice and heavy Class Ring, a Platinum Wedding Band and a lovely Gold Crucifix and Necklace. To top it off, we learned that the owner of the class ring has been contacted and a returned item FOM bonus is in play. Not to be outdone, our most notorious director (LR?) also reported a nice ring find from a northerly beach locale. So it looks like things are starting to heat up and we should see some great items on the FOM table. The FOM leaders are bunching up at the top in a tight range so this month could be a breakout for someone or a continued fight to the finish. Keep those finds coming and keep hunting.
In between your summer hunting activities please remember that our annual MHRS Family Picnic is on tap as well as our regular monthly membership meeting. The picnic is always a great time. As in years past, the club will provide the main course grilling items as well as the soft drinks and our members are bringing all kinds of other goodies for the food table. A feast in the making for sure. In addition we will have a Poker Hunt, a Red/White and Blue Hunt and a Balloon Toss Contest. If you haven’t signed up yet, please contact our Picnic Chairman, Juan Fragoso. Hope to see you there.
This month we will also host our annual Gold and Silver Exchange as part of our regular monthly meeting. If you are interested in trading gold and silver, this meeting is for you. To assist our members in this pursuit, the club will have a weighing and testing station set up. We will have the ability to weigh your items in grams or penny weight and test for gem stones. In addition we will also have a gold karat test kit available for unmarked items. The club will also calculate and post dollar values per gram and pennyweight for the common gold karats (10, 14 and 18) as well as for Sterling Silver (.925). The values posted will be based on the closing market prices from the Friday before the meeting. So bring your items in and do some horse trading or just take the opportunity to gauge the worth of your finds. It’s always amazing to see all these found items at one time and in one place. Our club members really do find a lot of great things.
Some good news. Our finances will allow us to increase the Silver purchase for the Fall Beach Hunt. We have raised the purchase amount to $1000 and have completed the purchase at below spot. I would like to thank the members that offered silver to the club at a discount and also thank Ron for coordinating the effort to make this happen.
As a last thought. Our members may find many treasures but our greatest treasure of all is our members. Each and every one. That’s it. Keep hunting and I hope to see you soon.
PAT

FYI
IN MEMORY OF:
We would like to express our sympathy and condolences to Doris Patitz, on the lose of her dear Mother Dorothy Peterhansel, who passed away in June. Our Prayers are with Doris and her Dad Bernard. Dorothy and Bernard were members of our club for many years, and she will be missed by her family and many friends.
FROM THE EDITORS DESK:
My thanks to MIKE SZYMCZAK, for his contributions to this Newsletter. I've already included one article in a past edition, and will be using the other in the future. I really like including "member written" articles in the newsletter, it is not only a big help, but adds enhancement to our publication! Take a clue from Mike, join the fun, write an article about our hobby or the club, what ever floats your boat. Thanks again Mike.
Thanks also to GENE ZSCHERNITZ, for his generous donation of a new gold etc. scale for the club. It will get a lot of use at our Gold and Silver Swap this month.
And speaking of DONATIONS! We are once again asking our members to be generous and donate to the FALL HUNT! The more goodies we have buried in the sand, the more fun we'll have digging them up. We have designated $1000 to buy coins etc. for the hunt, but as you all know, with 40 or more detectors out there, it is going to go pretty fast. So the more the merrier, the better the hunt! Remember the fall hunt is SEPTEMBER 19, 2010 at Gilson Park Beach, Wilmette.
Please bring in those donations to RON GUINAZZO, our Huntmaster, any time between now and then. All donations will be greatly appreciated. And remember too, ours is still the only club that DOES NOT charge it's members for CLUB HUNTS!

HOW DO YOU WANT YOUR NEWSLETTER E-MAIL OR SNAIL MAIL?
It's not a hard question, but it is beginning to be like pulling teeth, just to get an answer. We are asking EVERY MEMBER how do you want your newsletter delivered? If you have access to a computer, and can get your newsletter via the computer, it saves the club a lot of money! However, if you do not have a computer and/or would rather receive a hard copy (mailed) that's ok too! All we want to know is WHAT DO YOU WANT?
Please call me LYNN ROMA (Editor) at 847-749-3731 or E-Mail me at
HOWIEP77@ATT.NET or just come up to me at the raffle table at the meeting, and let me know. I will have a Club Roster there and will mark your name off as to your preference. Don't make me get on my SOAPBOX, what's it going to be?
E-MAIL OR SNAIL MAIL?
PROGRAMS:
We always say that "Participation is the name of the game", and this year we have been having a lot of participation at our monthly meetings. Thanks to all of our members for bringing in their great display's of finds and collectables, and participating in the Programs of the Month.
For the June meeting program on U.S. Coins, the tables were glittering with Gold and sparkling with Silver. Thanks to PAT, RON, KEITH, ART S. ART H. LARRY and HOWIE. WOW! Talk about your treasures! If you missed it, you missed a great one.
The program for AUGUST should be fun, it is called "WHATZIT"? Anything you have found (dug or peek & seek) that you don't know what it is, WHATZIT?
Or maybe you know twenty-one what it is but don't think anyone else will know WHATZIT?
This should be fun, and the board will pick out a few WHATZIT'S for a contest, who knows what they are? Pat will explain the rules at the meeting, and everyone will have a chance to guess WHATZIT!
Only items found while detecting, please no bought items. I have a WHATZIT, and I bet you do too! Bring it to the August meeting, remember PARTICIPATION is the name of the game!
PROGRAMS are an important part of all of our meetings, if you have a suggestion as to an interesting or fun program, let us know. The Board is always open to any ideas or suggestions that will keep our members happy!

TREASURES FROM THE SEA
OR IN OUR CASE
TREASURES FROM LAKE MICHIGAN!
While walking along the lake shore with your metal detector do you ever look down at the sand, even though you don't hear a beep-beep signaling a find?
Walking along the sand the other evening, I found some of Mother Natures very own treasures. Beautiful little shells shaped like Ice Cream Cones, and rocks with intricate fossils etched along their fronts or backs, depending on your point of view.
And what about "sea glass", every kid who visits the beaches of Lake Michigan, and probably any of the other great lakes, knows about "sea glass", do you? "Sea glass" are bits of broken glass tumbled smooth by the sand and rolling water, bits of blue, green, white and brown, but the most coveted are the rare bits of red, now that's a real find.
What about those broken shards of pottery? Maybe they came from the Lady Elgin, or some other long lost shipwreck, where ever they came from, they make for some crazy mosaics.
One vacation, Howie and I spent a day along the Gulf Coast of Florida, while he detected the water, I picked up sea shells, beautiful sea shells, sand dollars, small bits of driftwood, etc. I'm a crafter, so I really was in Heaven, deciding what I could make out of each shell I picked up. Angels, picture frames, jewelry, my mind was reeling with the "treasures" I had found. Tiny sand dollars make beautiful earrings!
We read once about a lady who made beautiful pictures with the "junk" her Th'ing husband brought home, nuts and bolts, odds and ends, the kind of stuff we find everyday. She made a lot of money selling her artwork to people who just threw their junk away!
As the saying goes, "one mans Trash is another mans Treasure", and if you look at the sand the way I do, you will never go home empty handed.
